Owning Answered Prayer
Prayer is a great avenue for us to communicate with the God who created the heavens and the earth. Jesus taught us to pray. Jesus authorized us to pray. Jesus modeled prayer for us. It is a good idea and most of us pray often. However, do you own prayer? More specifically do you own the answers to prayer? It is not hard to own the asking, but do we own the receiving? If I pray and never receive an answer in prayer, what is the point of prayer?
I have always struggled to be consistent in prayer, but as I have aged, I have learned to walk and talk and listen to God. I pray about everything. Increasingly I have come to expect, even craving an answer to my prayer. I confess that I have prayed many prayers in my life without expecting any real, tangible answer that I could own. Now that I am getting more answers, I am beginning to own these answers. When you own something valuable, you want to show it off. I don’t know a better way than to tell people that I prayed and asked God for something, and this is what He said to me. Usually, His answers are not giving me something, but telling me something, something I need to do or say to someone. I am learning to say like young Samuel, “Speak Lord, your servant is listening.” It is okay if you are skeptical of what I say the Lord told me to do. It is not yours to own. It is mine. If it is not contrary to His revealed will in Scripture, then I intend to own it and enjoy it just like I did my 410, which sits today in my closet. YOU DON’T OWN IT UNTIL YOU EXPERIENCE IT.
