What We Believe
About what? We believe a lot of things. So, how do I answer that question? I know what is expected. I have read the list of beliefs on church and organizations’ web pages. There are little differences among them, at least the ones I read. I want to try to tell you what CMI stands for in a few words. If you have more specific questions, ask. What is amazing is that I think I know our board members well enough to be able to speak for them. Let’s give this a try.

I see a belief system like a giant funnel. The further you go down the funnel, the narrower your beliefs become. We find much agreement with others at the widest part of the funnel. At the smallest part of the funnel, we usually eliminate everyone but our spouse and children, and we are unsure about them. Therefore, I would make the first point about CMI’s belief system. We seek to be as inclusive as God is and as exclusive as God is. How’s that for an obvious statement? But look at it closer. That is what drives our hearts. Here is another part of our approach. We seek to partner with anyone who loves Jesus and wants His gospel of the death, burial, and resurrection proclaimed in a spirit of continual Berean-like searching to discover what the Scriptures say.

Do we have a beginning point, a core belief, a set of non-negotiables? Yes, of course.

  • We believe in the Creator God, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the Father of Jesus as described in the Bible.

  • We also believe in Jesus, the One and Only Divine Son of this Father-God, as presented in the New Testament and Prophecy.

  • We also believe that the Bible is God’s revelation to man and is inerrant in its original form. The Holy Spirit, the third person of the Godhead, revealed scripture.

  • We believe the Bible has one consistent message: an unfolding story of a Promised Messiah who would provide the saving grace to confront and forgive our sins, allowing us to have fellowship with Him now and eternally.

  • We believe that Jesus had to die on the cross and be raised from the dead to accomplish this wonderful salvation. There was no other way or path to the Father who created us all, male and female.

  • We believe that our means of accepting this free gift of forgiveness is to put our faith in the Father and the Son, repent of our sinful thoughts, words, and deeds, confess the name of Jesus, and become His disciples by being immersed in water and into Christ, where God does the work of forgiving, redeeming, sanctifying, and giving us His own Holy Spirit to live within us.

  • We believe that Jesus built His church as a visible community of a spiritual reality in which we, as the bride of Christ, as sons and daughters of God, live in communion with Him.

  • As a church, we believe we must be devoted to the apostles' teachings, fellowship, the breaking of bread (Lord’s Supper), and prayers.

  • We believe Jesus commanded us to preach the gospel, the good news of salvation, to every person on earth so that all could look forward to His return one day from the right hand of God, where Jesus now intercedes for us.

  • We believe Jesus wants us to lead an obedient life as we seek to become more and more like Jesus in all we do. In this way, we fulfill the two greatest commands: to love God completely and to love our neighbor as we love ourselves.

This is what CMI believes and teaches. We avoid getting bogged down in foolish and unlearned questions. We seek unity with all who are pursuing God through Jesus to the best of their ability and understanding. In this way, we believe we are operating in the best tradition of the Restoration Movement, a movement devoted to just being Christians without creeds or denominational distinctions.
