Owning the Anointing
I confess that when others talk about the anointing it makes me a little nervous. It seems they mean that some have a special gift from God or have been especially chosen by God for an extraordinary purpose, like the anointing of a king or priest in the Old Testament. Samuel anointing David as king comes to mind. Jesus saying and quoting Isiah 61, “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because He has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor.” The word “anointing” can also be translated “Christ,” the anointed one. He is a one of a kind anointed one. Am I even a little “christ?” Even spell-check insists that I capitalize this word.
So, should we seek to own the anointing? 1 John 2:27 says we have received the anointing, and it should remain in us. It is a real anointing, not counterfeit. This anointing teaches us to remain in Him as He remains in us. Sounds like John 15, the vine and the branches. Perhaps 2 Corinthians 1:21-22 will clarify the matter. The anointing was for both Paul and the less-than-perfect Corinthian Christians (do you see the word anointing in the word Christian?). The anointing is the Holy Spirit who is our seal of ownership, a deposit or downpayment of our inheritance. Remember that Romans 8:9 says that if we do not have the Spirit we do not belong to Christ. The Spirit inside us is evidence that we are owned by Christ. So, with that being true, should we own our ownership? Another way to say it is we must own the fact that we belong to Christ. We were bought with a price, the blood of Christ. When I own my anointing, I live exclusively for the one who owns me. His anointing oil drips off my head down over my face to make clear I am under new management. I feel better now. I am ready to own the anointing. (BTW, when we are baptized in water and it drips off our bodies like the anointing oil of yesterday, we receive the Holy Spirit with an internal anointing. Remember when Jesus came up out of the water, the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove came and sat on his head. Pretty neat!) YOU DON’T OWN IT UNTIL YOU EXPERIENCE IT.
