Raising Kids in The Age of Foolishness: An Introduction
From God’s vantage point, every age is the age of foolishness. I don’t know about you, but I am thinking there are enough fools in the world. We are oversupplied. This series of articles is not about exposing the examples of folly that we see daily. I may use some examples as I go, but it is more about doing an autopsy of foolishness and contrasting it with wisdom. The differences are stark. Paul asked the Corinthians, “Where is the wise man? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age?” (1 Cor.1:20) Those he was drawing out were those who professed to be wise but were in fact fools alongside the wisdom of God. In fact, are we not all fools to some degree in comparison to our all-wise Father? Our first step to wisdom must be to admit this truth.
In my study, thus far, I am finding some clear markers for foolishness and wisdom. Fools show themselves to be fools by concrete actions and speech. There is a difference between someone who is simply immature and someone who is a fully developed fool. Fools are not born that way. It is an acquired trait. Even Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man. (Luke 2:52) The fool takes the alternate route. Such a one grows in foolishness and stature, and out of favor with God and man. Yes, foolishness is “bound up in the heart of a child,” but this kind of foolishness is the moldable kind. Once foolishness becomes hardened like year-old Play-Doh it takes a lot of additives to make it supple again.
Our study will take us deep into the DNA of foolishness, the mutated coding that is the corrupted version of wisdom. It only takes a few codes to become contaminated to render a genetic catastrophe. If a parent learns to recognize these potential mutations before they multiply, they can head off a cascading plunge into foolishness of their child. But if they miss the signs, it might be too late to pull them back from the abyss of a lifetime of foolish decisions and behaviors. So, join me on the journey. Remember: THERE ARE ENOUGH FOOLS IN THE WORLD.
